Winter Birds on Penobscot Bay
Yesterday, J (the hound) and I walked to Moose Point State Park and because the sky, the sea and beach were all variations on gray, I was thinking that we were in for more of a work out than a visual treat…I couldn’t have been more wrong. Inexplicably, we saw a multitude of birds beyond anything I can remember…maybe it has something to do with the milder temperatures or maybe the abundance of sea urchin shells we’re finding on the beach…but at any rate, the experience was so wonderful that I came back and pilfered these images from all over the web so you could see what I saw because I didn’t have my camera with me. 
Double Breasted Cormorant
A loon in winter plumage
Great Blue Heron

Bald eagle...at last count there were 80 nesting pairs in the Pen Bay watershed
Eider Ducks
Male Mallards hang out in the stream by the lobster bake area
Merganser (a large diving duck with a long, thin orange bill)
Barrows Golden Eye Duck (an endangered diving duck who's habitat includes Belfast Harbor)
American Black Duck
Guillemots are mottled brown and grey in the winter
