Penobscot Bay Stewards

One of the first events each spring at Searsport Shores is to host to the initial meeting of the Penobscot Bay Stewards program.

The program takes place during the month of May, and offers participants a unique opportunity to study the history, culture, the marine and coastal environment of the Penobscot Bay region. It’s provided through collaboration of the Maine Coastal Program of the State Planning Office with the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition. This year the Penobscot Bay Stewards program is celebrating it’s 20th year!

Twenty new Pen Bay Stewards gathered at The Studio for a full day to learn what to expect in the weeks ahead. Trips are scheduled to visit Indian Island, Castine, Rockland, Islesboro, Blue Hill, Stonington, Hurricane Island and of course Searsport and Belfast. At each location the group will meet with experts to expand their knowledge and understanding of the issues facing the Belfast Bay Watershed and the overall health of the Gulf of Maine.

There’s no fee to participate in the course, participants are expected to volunteer 30 hours to local conservation efforts of their choice during the coming year. There are many exciting volunteer opportunities available.
