Searsport Shores: Community Living & Maine’s Favorites

Community is the reason for living a campground life. The opportunity to share projects, chores, meals and cocktails with such creative people is a blessing I wish that more people could share.

Here at the Shores, the roles aren’t terribly clear because we all want time out in the sunshine and some of the folks volunteer while others are employed. If pushed to use labels, it’s probably most accurate to say that we have teams of Front Desk Hospitality & Gift Shop, Gardening & Landscaping, Housekeeping and Special Projects. Every single person here is a wonderful asset to our lives and your vacation. I hope that as you get to know everyone you’ll say hello and ask them for advice if you’re looking for something special.

As an interesting getting to know you exercise, I’ve asked everyone one of the crew three questions: (1) What’s your favorite Maine Meal? Where do you get the ingredients or what restaurant do you head to? (2) Where’s your favorite destination when you have a friend visiting from away or a few hours to indulge in a personal escape? (3) If you could go to only one store, which one would it be?

The Front Desk & Gift Shop:

Deb Hoverman:

Homeport Inn & Tavern for mussels in a poblano chili sauce or Graffam Brother’s Food Truck for fish tacos.

Owls Head Lighthouse and State Park is a favorite destination along the coast.

Loyal Biscuit Co. is where I’d take any of my dog loving friends.

Gayle Lear:

A Chicken Pesto Panini at Bell the Cat is one of my favorite go-to’s.

A walk in the woods on the Little River Nature Trails always restores my energy and piece of mind.

When I need a little retail therapy I head to the Kat Walk in Belfast

Elaine Palermo:

I love seafood. Scallops are my #1….not fried. I have them any chance I get. I am an equal opportunity scallop eater. Every restaurant has a chance.

Rockport Harbor and the top of Mount Battie ( I drive…no hike for me!) is where I’d take any of my friends.

The Purple Baboon is my favorite shop for souvenirs and fun stuff.

Laura Grenier:

There’s so much to choose from but a Falafel Wrap at Layalina‘s in Biddeford is my current favorite food.

Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde is an absolute must see destination.

Definitely if I can only choose one store, it would be Reny’s.

Gardening & Landscaping:

Gemma Bradney, Summer Beet Salad with Cilantro and Parsley…either grow the ingredients or get them at the Belfast Co-op.

Acadia National Park, Little Hunter’s Beach Trail or Knight’s pond in Lincolnville.

The Belfast Green Store is my favorite shop.

Wayne Doritey:

Fried Haddock Dinner at Anglers is always a winner.

I’d take my friend down to the Camden waterfront for a schooner ride on the Bay.

My favorite store is the Swan Lake Grocery Store in Swanville.

Richard Hoverman:

Without hesitation, a Crab Melt at Darby’s with french fries is my favorite meal.

My prettiest drive? Castine and the entire peninsula across the Bay.

I don’t know if a coffee shop counts as a store but I’d take my friend to Down Shift Coffee because it’s where I like to hide out.

Sandy Squire:

With all of the great restaurants around, it’s hard to pick one but if I were pressed, I’d choose Primo Restaurant in Rockland for Cauliflower Pasta with Saffron, pine nuts and mint.

I’d take my friends to either the Breakwater Light House or we’d take a mail boat to Eagle Island from Sunset

There’s really only one store, Reny’s because of the bargains and the surprises.

Cyrus Bishop:

Definitely a pile of Pulled Pork with spicy BBQ Sauce at Mainely Meats on MDI.

I’d bring my friends to Searsport Shores because it’s beauty is just too hard to beat.

I love hardware stores. The Home Supply Center in Belfast is a really good one.

Housekeeping:

Vicky Glass:

I like Delvino’s Grill and Pasta House in Belfast…a personal Greek Pizza always works for me.

Laite beach in Camden is such a pretty and peaceful place to go.

Heavenly Threads in Camden is my favorite store…there’s always something to discover on the racks..

Cindy Treadwell:

I make myself a pot of homemade navy beans with molasses and brown sugar.

Moose Point State Park is a perfect spot for picnic, not far from the campground.

Renys…it’s a Maine adventure!

Tracey Uddin:

My goto for a pretty ride and great produce is the Ararat Farmstand on Route 52.

My Friend Joseph’s front porch in Searsport is my favorite spot to relax but I don’t think that he’ll let me bring friends .

If you’re into the pleasures of botanical oils, the Lotus Garden Botanical Essential Oil Shop in Biddeford is an absolute treasure!

Special Projects, Jacks & Jills of all Needs:

Daisy Bradney:

I can make a whole meal of chocolate zucchini cake…as soon as the zucchini is ready in our garden.

I love to dive off the rocks into Megunticook Lake from Fernald’s Neck Preserve with my friends on a hot afternoon.

The best local store for interesting shopping is Fiddlehead Artisan Supply in Belfast.

Nicholas Carey:

Fried Clams at Just Barbs in Stockton Springs have the best platters.

I think the waterfront right in front of the campground is the best place to hang out with a friend.

Without question, The Chocolate Drop candy shop in Belfast is the greatest store I know.

Kevin Cochrane:

My favorite meal is All of them here at Searsport Shores…our Sunday night crew dinner is the best!

When I want to go someplace beautiful, I walk across the street from the campground for the hiking trails. I love to sit by the stream.

The best store around is the Green Store in Belfast…there’s something for everyone there.

Paula Cochrane:

Lobster of course. We go to Young’s Lobster Pound but we bring our own sides and a bottle of wine to keep it special.

I like to take friends to Rockland to the Puffin Project Visitors Center where you can watch the livestream of the Puffins.

My favorite store to share with friends or just visit on my own is the Maine State Prison Showroom Thomaston

Jason Cromeenes:

Take me to Anglers Restaurant in Searsport for Fried Dill Pickles & Chicken Tenders.

I think that Sears Island is one of my two favorite places in Maine, the other one would be Washington Maine.

The only store I need is Walmart.

Patti LeClair:

Crab meat straight up from Young’s Lobster Pound. Don’t mix it with anything.

Jim LeClair:

The best meal I know is to buy fresh crabmeat from Tozier’s Market in Searsport and use it to make either quiche or crabmeat deviled eggs…with fresh eggs from the campground store.

I love to take my friends to the Bee Hive on MDI. It’s a short 45 minute hike but the spectacular views change every ten minutes.

There are two stores that I like: (1) Any of the LL Bean Outlets (2) any beer store close to a bike trail.

Mike Mercer:

I make an awesome lasagna! I go shopping for ingredients in three places: The Belfast Coop, the Belfast Farmer’s Market or the Amish Community Market in Unity for ingredients.

I like to hang out at the Belfast waterfront, hiking the rail trail in its entirety is a day well spent.

The Amish General Store in Unity is great for food, clothes and anything else you might need.

Phil Norris:

My all time favorite meal is fried clams at my grandmother’s.

My favorite place to go, by myself or with friends is Monroe Falls.

Belfast Variety Store is the best.

Denny Treadwell:

Fried Clams almost anywhere…but the Anglers in Searsport is a good place to start.

Anyone who comes to Maine should visit Mount Desert Island at least once.

Everybody needs to go to Reny’s…any Reny’s!

Michael Vallier:

Broiled Haddock that I broil myself is the best possible meal. I go to McLaughlin’s in Bangor for all my fresh fish.

Cemeteries around Searsport are really interesting. One of my favorite is the Elmwood Cemetery across from Steamboat Gas Station.

Swan Lake Grocery is my favorite store.

Owning and managing a campground is the best job in the world. Everyday is filled with great people, happy animals and a natural setting that just makes everything good. I’m not wearing rosy colored glasses, I know that there’s too much pine pollen in June, the weather can change your landscaping plans in a heart beat and there are a few humans that seem to thrive on making other people miserable…but given a choice of anything I could be doing, I’d rather be surrounded by this crew ❤️
