Still Winter~ Islesboro’s just across the way
Islesboro is the long island we see just across from the campground on the right towards open ocean. The ferry terminal is about 15 minutes from our door yard and once you board the ferry you step into a more democratic world. On the Margaret Chase Smith ferry it’s first come- first serve…whether you’re a multimillionaire movie star or a local fisherman. In the past few weeks we’ve been involved with many from the island as we battle the Army Corps in their plans to suffocate the ocean bottom with dredge spoils from Mack Point…in a nutshell, there are federal plans afoot to spend $14 million tax payer dollars dredging the Searsport Harbor so that two foreign oil company can save a maximum of $850K/year by moving 8 ships in and out quicker every twelve months…risking our pristine Bay and important fishing industry. The good news is that in the evenings spent with lobstermen these past weeks we’ve learned that both the scallops and the ground fish (cod and flounder) are coming back in numbers not seen in 50 years…a real reason to celebrate…and maybe bring your fishing pole on vacation this summer. You may also want to consider day tripping to the island while you’re here…it’s a great place to explore by bicycle or on foot. Here’s a good link to start your research. I leave you with these beautiful images that artist friend Blake Hendrickson took earlier this week…
