Woodworking Camp With an Acadian Flare

We’ve had a rather long relationship with woodworking here in the campground. My father carves carousel animals and both Steve and Mike make furniture when they have time. Like all other pleasures, one thing leads to another and for the past three years Tom Cote, master woodcarver, has been our artist in residence the last week of June. He’s developed quite a following and has introduced many campers to the pleasures of wielding a chisel or whittling with a knife while they relax by a campfire. We’ve often talked about expanding to include other woodworkers and this year we have the pleasure of doing it.
Earlier in the week Steve and I went up to “the County” to spend time in the woodworking shops of both Tom and his brother Dee. We’ve decided that they will spend the week as usual carving and teaching but we’ll set up a teaching tent and take over the rec hall over the weekend of June 27-29, 2014. We’ll be inviting carvers to set up, teach short classes for nominal fees (no advanced sign ups required) and generally encourage everyone to pick up a sharp tool and shape some wood. Because this is the year of the Acadian Festival in Northern Maine, we thought we’d join in the fun and invite musicians and Acadian cooks to join us and add to the general atmosphere.
When the details are solidified, we’ll post more information. In the meantime, mark your calendars, spread the word and plan on joining us for the week or the weekend…this is a family event and people of all ages are welcome to attend.
